Simon Bloomberg Another frightening accident on one of Queen Street’s courtesy crossings has again raised concerns about the safety of the crossings with a nearby retailer saying it’s only a matter of time before a pedestrian is seriously injured. Richmond’s Tracy Mahon suffered a broken ankle when she was hit and run over by a car on the courtesy crossing near Sundial Square on April 23. It was the second serious incident on the crossing in the last three years after a 10-year-old schoolboy was hit and pinned underneath a car in September 2012. “I was three-quarters of the way across the crossing and the car hit me in the hip and knocked me backwards,” Tracy who works at the ANZ Bank says. “I tried to get up but my foot was trapped under the wheel. “I was screaming really loud but I don’t think the driver heard me - he was an old guy and I think he was in shock. Then, after what seemed like forever, he drove forward but he did it suddenly and

Drivers often get frustrated when they are delayed by road works but Higgins Contracting’s super-cheerful stop-go girl Cindy Thompson is doing her best to change all that. For the last three weeks, Cindy has been helping traffic flow at the road works at the intersection of State Highway 6 and Aniseed Valley and Edens roads. The road has been reduced to one lane while the intersection is being widened to make it safer and the stop-go team have been
busy keeping the traffic moving. But instead of becoming annoyed at the delays, many of the drivers are enjoying interacting with the smiley Cindy. Burly truck drivers can be seen laughing and car drivers tooting as Cindy waves, signals and dances her way through the day. “You have to be very aware of the traffic in this job but I also like to interact with the drivers,” Cindy says. “I have lots of people who smile and say ‘you have made my day’ - I feel I have
done my job if I can make one person smile.” Cindy, who also works as a stopgo girl for forestry companies, says she loves her job and, despite the theatrical signals and amusing dance moves, takes it seriously. “When I did the training for this job they said you have to smile and be happy because you are the face of the company. I guess I take it a little further than most,” she says. The road works are expected to be completed this week.

flying through the air when he was hit a couple of years ago and I heard the yelling when the lady was hit this time,” Warren says. “I’ve also seen a lot of near misses and verbal altercations and, unfortunately, it’s only a matter of time before a serious accident.” Richmond School principal Tim Brenton says he has been concerned about the safety of the crossings for a number of years. Many children attending the school use the crossings including Jordan Stirling-Rowling who was hit by the car on the same crossing when he was a pupil in 2012. “There’s such a lack of understanding and that’s what makes it hard for the children,” Tim says. “Sometimes they’ll wait and a driver will stop and usher them across and the next time the car won’t slow down or stop - it’s very confusing for them. “Richmond is getting bigger - it’s not a small country town any-
more - so those crossings don’t work. They need to be replaced by pedestrian crossings to make it clear who has to give way.” Richmond councillor Judene Edgar agrees that something needs to be done to make the crossings safer. She says the council in Hanmer Springs has painted “a couple of yellow lines” on the footpath at courtesy crossings to make pedestrians stop and look and that could be an option for Queen St. Judene says the latest accident highlights the need for the configuration of crossings be considered when the Queen St upgrade starts next year. The police are still investigating the accident. Waimea Weekly says: We believe something needs to be done with the courtesy crossings on Queen St. We’d like to see signs erected to give some clarity for pedestrians and motorists.

Poachers have been under the spotlight recently with a spate of incidences reported in the region since January and two men convicted in the Nelson District Court of unlawful hunting. And last week, Nelson police announced they are investigating the discovery of two cattle carcasses on a forestry track in the Dovedale area. The two Friesian-cross yearlings were found on the north side of Jacob’s Ladder on the ThorpeOrinoco Rd. Agribusiness manager Ashley Peter has been farming in the Dovedale area for over 30 years and says he is seriously considering putting in surveillance cameras around his property. “Poaching has always been a problem but the incidences are increasing and they now have more hi-tech night vision equipment and sophisticated guns,” says Ashley. Mensa is open to anybody who scores in the top two percent in a fluid intelligence test. Judith Tuckwell, testing coordinator for Nelson, says she always noticed she had to “edit” her conversations heavily before joining Mensa in the late 1960s. “When I joined Mensa I discovered that, when I am enthusiastic about something, I can overwhelm other people. When I was actually in a Mensa group I suddenly realised that I could say exactly what I liked and I would get a response that I had only dreamt of getting before. It’s a bit like a horse being let out of a stable going for a gallop, and I can just go for it.” Judith, now in her 70s, was the 27th Mensan in New Zealand. She started a social group in the Hawkes Bay before moving to Nelson. “That is what I’d like to create in Nelson. I’d love to have a mixed group. Mixed ages, mixed interests and the delight of the conversations.” There are around 400 Mensans in New

MOULDY PEACHES: A Nelson mother was “disgusted” to find a can of peaches that her daughter opened for dessert were so mouldy it was just a green mess. Kayla Heath says the can was purchased just weeks earlier and did not have an expiry date printed on it. BURNING CAR FOUND DOWN BANK: A burning car with human remains in it was found down a bank near the start of the Whangamoa Reserve on Sunday afternoon. Both Nelson and Hira fire trucks attended the scene along with a large number of police. The incident was first reported by Nelson Live. The car was lifted from the bank by a crane on Monday afternoon and the body will undergo a post mortem examination which police hope will confirm the identity of the deceased woman. Police say DNA testing may be required to confirm the identity.

Wayne completed his final career move nine years ago when Placemakers closed its Queen St site and relocated to Saxton Rd where he continued his role as trade sales manager. Although Wayne says “wood is still wood”, he has seen a number of big changes in the timber and hardware trade over the last 40 years. The introduction of computerised cutting, pre-nailed frame and trusses and an explosion in the range of “products that provide a solution for every building problem”, have made building faster and easier. “When I started, they were selling wet timber in packs with mixed lengths. Now everything is kiln dried and cut to set lengths and you’d never build a house without prefabricated
frames and trusses. “In the old days a builder really would build a house. He’d pitch the roof and cut the framing - he’d do everything. “These days builders just fit a house together which is sad but it’s just the modern way. Time is money and all these changes mean they can build a house really quickly now.” Wayne says he will miss working with all the great people in the timber and hardware trade and building industry but hints that he may not have finished quite yet. “I haven’t thought about what I’ll do when I’ve finished. I just want to wind down and get my thoughts together but I’m sure there are some opportunities out there - I still have some petrol left in the tank.”

The Kaiteriteri general store has been pulled down with a new one to be built before the summer.
New general store for Kaiteriteri Monique Bergman Holiday makers will be able to enjoy brand new facilities next summer with stage two of the Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve redevelopment underway. In January of 1936, a small parcel of land was set aside as public domain for camping at Kaiteriteri and placed under the oversight of the Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve Board. They are responsible for managing the Kaiteriteri Beach Motor Camp, local store, café and restaurant. Stage two of the Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve redevelopment has commenced with the old store being demolished. “We hope that people will enjoy it more and the changes will tidy up the flow of traffic and will bring people together in one central area,” says Chris Hawkes, chairman of the Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve Board. The land for the new Kaiteriteri store has been dug out and filled making way for the foundations to be laid. The plans involve a new general store located on a similar footprint to the old store with around eight motel units above. The area between the store and the cafe out to the road will also be developed with a pedestrian only
courtyard at the same level as the existing cafe deck. Tourism concession booths will be situated in this area in addition to outside furniture. The petrol pumps will be relocated to the back of the new carpark and there are also some changes to the cafe to facilitate service into the courtyard. The surrounding area will also receive a makeover with grounds around the lagoon developed and a boardwalk constructed. “The new landscaping will make use of the area far better than it is now, there will be more green spaces and native trees,” says Chris. Stage one of the redevelopment was completed in November last year and included a new administration block with reception, offices, first aid room, staff amenities, a caretaker’s flat and a conference room for up to 50 people. Two temporary portacom buildings have been established in the main carpark area beside the playground and stock a limited range of products and will remain until the new store is finished. Fuel will not be available for at least three months while it is relocated to the main carpark. IMB Construction Ltd of Nelson are the contractors of the rebuild which is due to be completed by the end of November this year.

Duck hunters have mixed results Opening weekend was a mixed one for duck shooters with ducks giving them the slip in early morning fog that shrouded inland areas and flying high and out of range in clear blue skies on the coast. But Nelson Marlborough Fish and Game acting manager Lawson Davey says the ducks didn’t escape unscathed with hunters who were in the “right place” getting their bag limits. “Some did pretty well while others struggled,” Lawson says. “We were ranging around Springs Junction and it was very foggy so the ducks were flying high and couldn’t see the decoys. “I spoke to a hunter who’d been out on the Waimea Estuary who said there were reasonable numbers of birds about, but due to the fine calm weather most were flying
pretty high. But then we saw one pond in Maruia where the hunters had got their limit by 10am.” Lawson says hunters were well behaved with rangers, who this year were joined by police officers, only seizing one shotgun from a hunter without a licence who was using illegal lead shot. “We haven’t had the police come along with us for a few years so it was good to get them out there. They were checking for firearms licences and to make sure there were no issues with alcohol. Lawson says the number of hunters shooting around the region was down this year with many of them deciding to shoot on the West Coast or Canterbury. There are about 900 game bird shooting licence holders in the Nelson-Tasman region.

Study grant helps local to ‘live her dream’ As a young mother, Raylene Stringer had to ditch her dream to become a nurse, but ten years on she’s ready for another crack at it. Raylene decided that studying to be a nurse while raising a young child and paying the bills was too much to handle, so she instead turned to a career as a vet nurse. But with her son now grown up, Raylene has cut all luxuries from her life to head back to study full time and live her dream. “It’s hard, but I love it. I’ve given up a lot, the sacrifice is huge, but I’m not scared of a challenge.” The full time course at NMIT takes three years to complete, but it’s not just the stud-
ies that are hard work, juggling finances at home is just as tough. “I’ve had to tighten my belt on everything, the only thing I’ve allowed myself to keep is my gym membership. Everything else has gone. I gave up coffee, although there is still instant sometimes.” Due to her tight budget, Raylene says she looked around for what scholarships she was eligible to apply for. She came across the Soroptomist International of Waimea Scholarship Grant and, after a gruelling selection process, was picked to receive $2500 from the group. HOPE RANGE AERIAL POSSUM CONTROL OPERATION Vector Free Marlborough Ltd wishes to advise the public of its intention to aerially apply the toxin Sodium Fluoroacetate (1080) for the purpose of controlling possums in the Hope Range area. Nelson Netball premier grade gets underway at Saxton Stadium on Thursday night with teams having a “warm up” of two shortened games before the season proper begins the following week. On paper, Richmond Glass looks to be the team to beat as they set out to defend their title. Mikaela Powick is the only loss, as she is now at university while a noteworthy acquisition is Jess Bygate who has transferred from Jacks. Jess will combine to form a formidable shooting duo with Nicky Rampton, while promising youngster Aimee Book will also bolster the offensive lineup. The remainder of Richmond’s roster is tried and true with a wealth of talent and experience across the court. Richmond have had the benefit of game time at the Super Club Competition in Christchurch in early March, where they faced teams who played with more speed, however they were disappointed with their outings in Nelson the following week. Coach Kathleen Thornalley is looking forward to the eightteam competition, however, she does have to contend with the

Runners-up from last year, Jacks OPD have lost the services of ace shooter Ani Waitai, although Welsh shooter Rebecca James has returned to the side. Jess Drummond has returned to Nelson from Christchurch and is likely to make her presence felt through the mid court. Jacks claimed the Geraldine Hodgson Tournament trophy last weekend, when they scraped through with a one goal win over Prices Pharmacy. Jacks will not be taking anyone lightly as anyone is a threat on any given day. Kalyssa Rasmussen will go from being the “baby” of Waimea College to their most experienced player all within the space of a year, as she is the only remaining player from 2014. Stoke Sun City face a baptism of fire when they meet Richmond in their first competition game as it is a seeded draw. Prices Pharmacy will also have two teams in the competition. Mandy Whiting is again calling the shots for the A team which has a similar look about it, with former players, Shar Lowe (injury) Christta Burrows (overseas) and Dayna Whiting (study), returning. Tom Alesena has the reins of Prices Black and has a fairly new team to work with Shevaun Collier and Kelly Jenkins are expected to lead the offensive end. McKenzie Taikato is the experience in the mid court and Bex Watene will call the shots in the defensive third. With three returning from last year’s Premier 2 winning side, Nelson College for Girls are fortunate in having leaders in each third with Abbey Frankin in the shooting, Charlotte Timms in the mid and Merekara McGuinnetty in the defensive third.

The Hope Community Church’s week long Hopefest starts next Saturday May 16 with the incredibly popular Big Share Fair. The church held their first Hopefest in 2009 and it was such a success that it has become a biennial event. And it’s not surprising that it is the most popular event at Hopefest with the church collecting hundreds of donated items to give away to the community. Senior Pastor Donald Irvine says Hopefest is all about giving back to the community and the Big Share Fair provides a generous and fun format for doing just that. People are issued with free Hope Notes when they walk in the door of the church and can “spend” the money on the wide range of items at the fair. “We get most of the items donated by our church family but things come from near and far. The donated items extend to food, goods and services either available on the day or by vouchers that can be redeemed at a time to suit both parties. Vouchers can be for the services of a handyman, babysitter or even a meal cooked for your family. Everyone gives so generously so we can give back to the community” Donald says. The Big Share Fair will be held at the church 114 Ranzau Rd West
in Hope on Saturday May 16 from 9:30am – 12:30pm. Hopefest’s theme of giving to the community doesn’t stop there with the church holding a free Charity Quiz night on Friday May 22. Instead of keeping the prizes, the winning teams will get to give a total prize pool of $3000, donated by the church, to the Nelson Marlborough Hospice, Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter, St John, Big Brothers Big Sisters and Red Cross Refugee Services. The quiz starts at 7:30pm. Richmond striker ‘will score goals’ Ben Harris is hoping his stint with Richmond Athletic will be a giveand-take relationship. He wants to give a few tips to the club’s youngsters and take plenty of goals. Either way it’s a good scenario for FreshChoice Richmond, which will welcome the young English striker into its first team for the first time this Saturday. Ben, 24, has watched a couple of Richmond games since arriving to Nelson last month and likes what he sees. “They give it 100 per cent. The skill level may not be what I’m used to but they give it their all and that’s all you can ask.” Ben says he should score a bucketload of goals during his two month stay with the club. “I will bully defences. I should be scoring three goals a game but I won’t say that. I’d be happy with a goal a game.” That may look arrogant in print but Ben says he doesn’t mean it that way. “I’m a confident player, definitely not an arrogant player.” Ben plays in the Isthmian League in England, three tiers down from the professional League Two. He was injured half way through

A connection between Richmond’s first division coach Matt Campbell and Ben’s UK manager tempted Ben south and he says he’s already enjoying Nelson. “It’s beautiful, and this is coming into winter? I could get used to this.” Matt says while Ben will provide a boost to the fortunes of the first team on the pitch, he’s hoping for positive effects off it too. “Ben knows his role here and it’s just as much about working with the players and passing on some of his knowledge. The league he comes from is a really high standard so he has a lot that he can pass on.” Ben says he’ll return to the UK around July and try to break into the Conference Premier grade. On the field, Richmond sit sixth in the Nelson Bays Football first division and will host Wakefield at Jubilee Park this Saturday from 3pm.

Waimea expecting tough battle in Picton
Simon Bloomberg Star and Garter Waimea Old Boys are expecting another tough forward encounter when they play Waitohi in their Tasman Trophy club rugby game at Endeavour Park in Picton this Saturday. Waimea Old Boys prevailed 30-17 in a hard-fought battle against Blenheim team Moutere in last Saturday’s game and coach Mark Milne is expecting more of the same when they travel to Picton. Waitohi has a big, physical pack like Moutere and
Mark says it will be important to gain parity up front. “Waitohi have a big pack and they are going to be even harder at home. They have lost some player from last year but they’ll still be a good side.” Mark says he was pleased with last week’s performance against Moutere and will be looking for his players to continue with that improvement. Waimea led 15-7 at half time against Moutere, before centre Luca Roden and substitute winger Talor Simpson-Brown scored in the second to seal the win.
“I was really pleased with our structure against Moutere - it was probably the best we’ve played all year. We created a lot of opportunities and although we didn’t finish off that well, that was partly because they defended really well.” Mark says they have been focusing on the ruck and clean-out at training this week, as well as “stepping up our defence”. The game kicks-off at 3pm. Waimea Old Boys B beat Tapawera 49-3 in their division two game last Saturday.
JAB UNDER WAY: Waimea Old Boys junior players took to the field on Saturday when the club’s 19 JAB teams played their season-openers at grounds around the region. Waimea has 270 junior players in teams from under-six to under-13, making it the biggest JAB club in Nelson. JAB president Jeremy Salton says the teams are well supported by enthusiastic parents with many of the coaches staying with a side right through the grades. SPORT Briefs RUGBY: The Rangers Rugby Club is holding its 60th Season Club Day at the Moutere Hills Community Centre in Upper Moutere this Saturday. Kick-off for the JAB teams will be at 11am with the senior game starting at 1.15pm. There will be a sheep on the spit as well as a sausage sizzle and hot food and drinks available from our shop and entertainment for the children. CYCLING: Daniel Reid won the annual Naked Bun Fun Ride held around Mapua, Moutere and Motueka on Sunday. Daniel won in 2hr 36min 4sec, two seconds ahead of Mike Anderson and 51 seconds clear of Mike Reid. Kim Marshall was the first female rider finishing in seventh, 54 seconds behind the winner and three seconds ahead of under-19 rider Michaela Kerr. LEAGUE: The Richmond Rabbits recorded their first win of the season beating Victory Phoenix 24-12 in their Tasman Rugby League match at Nelson Intermediate on Saturday. Sunny Morgan, Sam Hedges, Jacob Edwards and Lindsay McPhillips scored tries for Richmond with Hayden Smith kicking four conversions. Wanderers Wolves defeated Wairau Taniwha 64-16 at Brightwater to remain at the top of the table after four wins. FUN RUN: The Jennian Homes Mother’s Day 5km Fun Run and Walk is being held this Sunday starting at 10am.
